The 17th Lancers (Duke of Cambridge's Own) is a British cavalry regiment that was formed in 1759 and remained an independent unit until 1922! The unit underwent its baptism of fire during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763) fighting mainly in Germany. She also took a very active part in the US War of Independence (1775-1783). Interestingly, during the Napoleonic Wars, the 17th Lancers regiment was used primarily in the course of colonies: in the Caribbean and South America. The regiment, however, went down in the history of the British army mainly due to its achievements during the Crimean War (1853-1856), and especially its participation in the famous charge of the light brigade during the Battle of Balaklava in 1854. Later, the unit fought in conflicts with the Zulu and took part in the Second Boer War (1899-1902). At the outbreak of World War I, the unit was stationed in India, but from November 1914 the regiment served on the Western Front, taking part, among others, in the Battle of Cambrai in 1917. In 1922, the regiment was merged with the 21st Lancers to form a completely new unit.
