The castle in Khotyn is currently located in Ukraine in the Chernivtsi region. The site's roots go back to the full Middle Ages, when a small defensive structure was erected here - most likely made of wood and earth - belonging to the principality of Halych. In the second half of the thirteenth century, thanks to the princes Daniel and Lev Halicki, the building was significantly expanded. At the end of the 14th century, when Khotyn belonged to the Moldavian farm, the building was transformed into a real stone castle, which, by the way, was significantly expanded. At the end of the 16th century, with the final entry of Moldova into the orbit of the Ottoman Empire, the castle is transformed into a fortress, roughly conforming to the standards of the art of war of the time. In the 17th century, the fortress witnessed two great battles in 1621 and 1673 between the Polish army and the forces of Ottoman Turkey. On the Polish-Lithuanian side, the commanders in this struggle were hetmans Jan Karol Chodkiewicz and Jan Sobieski, the future king of Poland. From 1711, the castle in Khotyn belonged to Turkey.
