The French army at the start of World War I, in August 1914, was perceived as one of the largest and most modern in Europe. This army was also eager to retaliate for the defeats suffered at the hands of Prussia in the years 1870-1871. The basic, numerically largest, type of armed forces was infantry. In addition to line infantry units or zuaves, its ranks also included alpine shooters (French Chasseur Alpins), i.e. infantry trained to operate in mountain conditions. For the first time, formations bearing this name were formed in the French army in 1888, and at the start of World War I (August 1914), they numbered 12 battalions. They were quickly sent to the front in the Vosges Mountains, where they quickly fell behind in the trench war. A year later, in 1915, an additional 9 Chasseur Alpins battalions were formed in the French army. After the end of World War I, most of the Chasseur Alpins battalions were disbanded.
