GSG 9 (full name: GSG 9 der Bundespolizei) is a German anti-terrorist police unit, established after the tragic events that took place during the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. The then German Interior Minister, Hans-Dietrich Genscher, gave the consent to create GSG 9. The main tasks of this unit include fighting terror in the broad sense, rescuing hostages, escort tasks, but also - most likely - the elimination of the leaders of terrorist organizations. GSG 9 members go through a 22-month training cycle divided into two parts: the first is general training, and the second is team improvement, specialist training, and advanced tactical exercises. At present, GSG 9 is divided into three main sub-divisions: 1. / GSG 9 - a group responsible for activities on land (approx. 100 people), 2. / GSG 9 - a group trained for activities on water bodies (also approx. 50 people) and 3. / GSG 9 - a group intended for operations from airplanes and helicopters (approx. 50 people). The members of GSG 9 are armed with rifles and pistols such as: Glock 17, MP5, HK PSG1 or SG550. Currently, GSG 9 is recognized as one of the best anti-terrorist units in the world.
