Skoda 44E (another designation: EU 05 series) is a series of standard-gauge electric locomotives, which were produced at the Skoda plant in Pilzno at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s. The service weight of a single locomotive was 82.5 tons, and its length with buffers - 16.14 m. The diameter of the wheels was 1250 mm, with the Bo'Bo 'axle system.
The Skoda 44E locomotive was developed as a new locomotive with electric traction dedicated to freight rolling stock, initially for use by Czechoslovak railways. Swiss companies participated in its design, and finally a low-reliability, durable and in essence universal locomotive was developed. In Czechoslovakia, locomotives of this type, under the designation E499.01, entered service in 1959. Very quickly, as already in 1961, 30 copies were ordered by Polish PKP. In our country, they were used primarily for passenger transport, including: on the Warsaw - Czech Prague route. A certain number of these locomotives also found their way to the USSR, where they are still in use today.
