Fablok 12D (another designation: SM15 series) is a series of diesel shunting locomotives that were produced in the years 1963-1966 at the Fablok plant in Chrzanów. The service weight of a single locomotive was 70 tons, and its length with buffers - 12.6 m. The locomotive was built in the B'B 'axis system. In total, 55 locomotives of this type were built.
The SM15 series locomotive is in fact a license version of the Soviet TGM3 diesel locomotive, however, adapted to Polish conditions. The main changes concerned the transmission, which in the original turned out to be one of the most failure-prone and unsuccessful structural elements. For a significant part of the Fablok 12D locomotives, the propulsion was provided by a Soviet-made 750 HP engine, only some locomotives were equipped with a Polish-made engine marked as V12CD19 with a capacity of 800 HP. The main disadvantage of this locomotive was a very high failure rate - especially of drive units and transmissions. This resulted in relatively little production for the SM42 locomotive (Fablok 6D).
