NYPD Emergency, or New York City Police Department Emergency Service Unit is the primary tactical unit of the New York Police Bureau of Special Operations. The unit was established in 1920 and is still operational. Currently, its tasks include conducting direct anti-terrorist activities, carrying out implementation in the fight against organized crime, but also rescue operations carried out in difficult conditions. NYPD Emergency officers are specially trained both in the implementation of tactical tasks (in this respect they are modeled on other SWAT units), but also in first aid and rescue. The NYPD Emergency consists of 11 sub-units: 10 ESS (Emergency Service Squads), which operate in selected areas of the New York agglomeration, and the Apprehension Tactical Team (colloquially A-Team) operating throughout the agglomeration. Recruitment to the unit is rigorous and conducted among New York Police officers. An officer candidate for NYPD Emergency must have a minimum of five years of impeccable service, and a non-commissioned officer - at least two years. The unit has several types of vehicles in stock, including: Lenco Bear-Cat and Lenco Peacekeeper wheeled armored vehicles.
