Dover is a city in the south of England, located in Kent, on the English Channel, which is the closest city to France to Great Britain. For this reason alone, Dover, since the Middle Ages, played a large role in English and later British shipping. It is worth adding that sources from the end of the 11th century mention this city. However, the really intensive development of this city took place only in the 16th century, during the reign of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I of the Tudor family, when the Dover fortifications were significantly expanded. From the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, Dover grew in importance, and from 1606, the post already had the so-called Harbor Board, the operation of which was largely based on a special royal privilege. During the 18th century, Dover served as a port and naval base for the Royal Navy, but was less of a role than other ports in southern England.
