Since the Middle Ages, Stockholm has been a key city and port in Sweden, which also acted as a kind of shipbuilding base for that country. The development of boatbuilding was fostered not only by the wide availability of great wood, i.e. in the Middle Ages and the modern era, but also by the location of Stockholm on the islands and direct access to the Baltic Sea. Already in the middle of the fifteenth century, you can find sources confirming the functioning of the wharf called Stadsgarden which to this day is used for various types of loading and unloading operations. It is worth adding that from the end of the 17th century, ships and ships were also built in this part of Stockholm. However, in the 16th century and for much of the next century, Skeppsgarden was the key shipyard for the city of Stockholm, with over 400 working people around 1620. Skeppsgarden was also the largest shipyard in all of Sweden at that time! It is worth adding that the famous Vasa sailing ship was built here. It is also worth remembering that Skeppsgarden served as the main base of the Swedish navy on the Baltic Sea for almost the entire 17th century.
