Novgorod was a Russian coastal defense battleship from the late 19th century. The keel for this unusual vessel was laid in 1871, and the launch took place in 1874. In the same year, the ship entered service. At the time of launching, its total length was 30.8 meters, and also 30.8 meters wide. The displacement reached approx. 2,500 tons, and the maximum speed was approx. 6-7 knots. The armament at the time of the launch consisted of 2 frontloader 280 mm guns.
The battleship Novgorod was built at the New Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg, and its main designer and originator was Vice Admiral AA Popov. The unit had an extremely avant-garde design, because its hull was in the shape of a circle with funnels placed on it and the main artillery position. The aim of such an unusual solution was to ensure the best possible stability for the ship while firing, but also to strive for the best possible armor of the battleship. However, the theoretical assumptions had nothing to do with practice, as Novgorod turned out to be very unstable, very difficult to steer and of little use in combat. The unit only took a very limited part in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. In 1903 she was withdrawn from service, and in 1911 was sold for scrap.
