The Parthenon is the main temple of the complex on the Athenian Acropolis, which was dedicated to the goddess Athena Parthenos, from whom it took its name. Construction of the temple was started in 447 BC, and it was completed in 432 BC. It is assumed that the architects responsible for the construction of the Parthenon were Iktinos and Kallikrates. On the other hand, Phidias was responsible for the very impressive sculptural decorations. He also made the 11-meter-high statue of Athena, famous in the ancient era. The Parthenon was built on a peripteros plan, i.e. it was surrounded by a single colonnade. It also has a pronaos (vestibule) and a naos, i.e. the place where the goddess statue was located. The building was erected in the Doric order and is widely recognized as the best example of this architectural order in ancient Greece. Nevertheless, it does have a small number of elements typical of the Ionian order. At present, the Parthenon is seen as a symbol of ancient Greek culture and civilization.
