MS Karpaty was a Polish tanker of German production, which was launched in 1927. At the beginning of the 1950s, the length of the ship was 131.3 meters, width 16.8 meters, and the draft was 7.9 meters. The gross capacity was around 6,600 tons. The propulsion was provided by a single combustion engine with a capacity of 2,100 hp, allowing a maximum speed of 10 knots. The crew consisted of about 40 people. MS Karpaty, originally called Adria, was built at the German shipyard Schiffs- und Maschinenbau Werk AG in the city of Bremen. Until the outbreak of World War II, the service of the unit (managed by successive shipowners) ran almost smoothly and without any notable moments. However, in October 1939, Adria was commandeered by the Kriegsmarine, receiving a new name - Öllschiff 4 and becoming a tanker of the German Navy. In this role, it operated primarily in the North Sea and the North Atlantic in the period 1940-1941. From the end of 1941, they were used as a transport ship between Norwegian ports and Germany. The ship, despite the damage, survived World War II, and after 1945 it was initially sent to Great Britain, and later to the USSR, but from 1947 a white and red flag fluttered over the vessel. The unit was badly damaged in a Mediterranean storm in November 1957 and sold for scrap a year later.
