The Russian army has undergone considerable changes after its defeat in the war with Japan in 1904-1905. First of all, efforts were made to improve the training of privates, but also non-commissioned officers and officer cadres, and efforts were also made to use the bloody experience in tactics and operational art. A few years after that war, the 7.62mm PM M1910 heavy machine gun (in short: heavy machine gun) was introduced on a relatively large scale, which in fact was a Maxima machine gun adapted to Russian conditions. This weapon turned out to be the basic heavy machine gun of the Russian infantry during the Great War. It is worth adding that in the course of the Russo-Japanese War, the Russian cavalry was equipped with a very successful, but expensive to produce, manual machine gun (short: rkm) Madsen with which it entered the First World War. It also saw the need for a lighter machine gun for infantry. For this reason, French LMGs began to be introduced into the armament of the Russian infantry Chauchat, and in 1915, a little-known weapon was introduced into service - the so-called Fedorov automaton.
