Washington Monument is a white obelisk made of marble, sandstone and granite, which is located in one of the parks of the American capital called the National Mall. As the name suggests, it was created to commemorate and celebrate the presidency of George Washington - the first president in US history. The designer of the obelisk was Robert Mills, and work on it lasted from 1848 to 1884, but the object was not unveiled until 1888. Such a long course of works resulted from a 27-year break in its construction caused by financial problems and the Civil War (1861-1865). The facility is 169.3 meters high and is one of the tallest facilities of this type in the world. Its weight, in turn, is estimated at approx. 80 thousand. tone! Interestingly, in the 20th century, an elevator was installed inside the monument, which could take you to the very top of the obelisk. In 2011, as a result of an earthquake, the obelisk was seriously damaged and was closed to the public and was renovated and repaired. It reopened in 2014.
