Hussars is a de facto term for a light cavalry formation that probably dates back to the 15th century, and certainly comes from Hungary. In the course of the 16th and 17th centuries, they became one of the most important cavalry formations serving in the armies of the Austrian Habsburgs, and in the 18th century this formation spread to other European countries, especially Prussia and Russia. At that time, but also in the 19th century, the hussar's uniform was made of a richly braided jacket called the Hungarian dolman, over which a mentyk was thrown over it. Of course, the uniform was complemented by richly embroidered trousers and a headgear - often in the form of a chaka or mirliton. In Poland, the first hussars were probably established at the end of the 18th century, during the Ko¶ciuszko Uprising (1794). During the period of the Duchy of Warsaw (1807-1815) two hussar regiments were formed: the 10th and the 13th hussar regiment. The first, called the Golden Hussars, was commanded by Jan Nepomucen Umiñski, and the second - Józef Toliñski. Both were formed in 1809. The Polish hussars were equipped with a cavalry rifle, a saber and a pair of pistols. It is worth adding that perhaps in 1813 the hussars of the 13th regiment received lances as their weapons. Both regiments took active part in the campaigns of 1812 and 1813.
