The AIM-132 ASRAAM is a modern British short-range air-to-air missile. Its first prototypes appeared at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, and the missile entered service in 1998 and is still in service. The AIM-132 ASRAAM measures 290 cm with a diameter of 16.6 cm. The missile is capable of carrying a warhead weighing up to 10 kg with a total curb weight of 88 kg. It is estimated that the maximum range of the missile is 18-25 kilometers.
The genesis of the ASRAAM missile goes back to the 1980s, when Great Britain and Germany, with the cooperation of the USA, started work on a short-range missile to replace the AIM-9 Sidewinder. However, due to further delays in the project, first the United States withdrew from its implementation, which focused on a far-reaching modification of the AIM-9 missile, and then Germany, which developed its own missile called IRIS-T. Finally, the ASRAAM missile was developed by the British side, and above all by companies that later became part of the MBDA consortium. Currently, the main users of the ASRAAM missile are Great Britain, Australia and India.
