The Alfa Romeo 179 is an Italian Formula 1 car that debuted on the track at the Italian Grand Prix in 1979 and competed in F1 races in the 1979-1982 seasons. Its designers were Carlo Chiti and Roberto Chouleta. The vehicle was powered by a single Alfa Romeo 1260 12-cylinder engine with a displacement of 3 liters and a power of 520 HP. The 179 model was developed to replace on the tracks another car from the Alfa Romeo stable - the 177 model. Compared to its predecessor, it was mainly characterized by improved aerodynamics and was powered by a different power unit. He also used the so-called the ground effect, based on the creation of negative pressure by e.g. specially designed shape of the chassis. Several versions of the Alfa Romeo 179 car were created, including: 179C, 179D (low-height version) and 179F (carbon-fiber car). The most famous Alfa Romeo 179 driver was especially Mario Andretti. The Alfa Romeo 179 car started a total of 63 Grand Prix races, but did not win any of them.
