SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American merchant ship (the so-called bulk carrier) operating in the Great Lakes basin on the border of the USA and Canada (the so-called lake ship). The keel for this ship was laid in 1957, launched in June 1958, and made its first voyage in the same year (1958). The total length of the vessel was 222 m, width 23 m, and the capacity - approximately 13,600 GRT. The top speed was around 14 knots.
SS Edmund Fitzgerald was commissioned by the Nortwestern Mutual Life Inssurance Company consortium at Great Lasek Engineering Works (GLEW for short). The main task of the new ship was to transport iron ore mined in the area of the city of Duluth to river ports in Detroit and Toledo. From the very beginning, it was assumed that it would be a very large vessel, but within the limit that would allow it to sail across the St. Lawrence on the Atlantic (so-called seawaymax). At the time of the launch of the SS, Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest lake operator operating in the Great Lakes region - he held this title until 1959. The unit performed very well during the service and was highly failure-free. However, SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank as a result of a sudden and very violent storm on November 10, 1975. The wreckage of the vessel probably became a grave for all 29 crew members.
