Eduard 648559 B-61 nuclear bombs

The B61 is an American, free-fall, tactical thermonuclear bomb from the Cold War and modern times. The length of its basic version is 356 cm with a diameter of 33 centimeters. Its first prototypes were built in 1963, and its mass production started in 1968. It is assumed that around 3,150 bombs of this type were created in total. The presented bomb was developed for the needs of the American Air Force, which in the early 1960s sought to obtain a multi-purpose tactical nuclear bomb with variable yield. From the scientific and technical side, the Los Alamos National Laboratory was responsible for the development of the B61 bomb, and its production was carried out by the Panter Plant company. It is worth adding that several variants of the B61 were created in the course of production, including the following versions: Mod 3 (with an explosion power up to 170 kT) or Mod 7 (which is in fact a strategic bomb with an explosion power up to 350 kT). The presented nuclear weapons could and can still be carried by such planes as: F-4 Phantom, F-15E Strike Eagle, F-35 Lightning II, but also B-1 or B-2 Spirit.
