The roots of the Life Guards cavalry regiment / regiments (LG for short) go back to the second half of the 17th century, when in 1658 its first, later sub-unit called His Majesty's Own Troop of Horse Guard. In 1788, two regiments were formed, named 1st and 2nd Life Guard. Both regiments were considered probably the most elite in the British army - they were characterized by very good training and great morale. They were the key branches of the so-called Household Cavalry. Applying continental norms, it can be assumed that both regiments were cuirassier regiments, and their soldiers were armed with single-edged broadswords and a pair of pistols in olders. They wore a specific helmet with a ponytail on their heads. Both regiments deserved during the campaign on the Iberian (1807-1814), but most of all they became famous during the Battle of Waterloo (1815), where they fought as part of The Household Brigade under the command of General Edward Lord Somerset.
