The Lycoming T55 (another designation: LTC-4) is a turbo-shaft engine from the Cold War period and modern times of American production. The first successful engine start-up took place in the 1950s, and serial production started shortly after. More than 4,200 engines of this type were developed in the course of the process. In the T55-L-714A version, the engine measures 119.6 cm in length with a diameter of 61.6 cm. The weight of the "dry" engine is 377 kilograms. The maximum power generated by the T55-L-714A version reaches 4,934 HP. The T55 engine was developed by Lycoming Engines as an enlarged version of the T53 engine with significantly improved performance and generating significantly more maximum power. Currently, the Honeywell Aerospace concern is responsible for the production of the T55 engine, like the T53 model. In the course of production, the engine has been modernized many times, especially in terms of the power achieved. These efforts led to the fact that while the T-55-L-1 version generated 2231 HP, one of the newest (T55-L-714A) already generates 4934 HP! It is worth adding that the Lycoming T55 engine also became the basis for the development of a turboprop engine. It was also used as a power unit primarily on CH-47 Chinnok and Bell 214 helicopters, but is also currently used for testing on Sikorsky-Boeing SB-1 Defiant prototypes.
