Revell 04947 DC-4 Balair / Iceland Airways

The Douglas DC-4 was a four-engine American-made airliner. The flight of the prototype took place in 1942, and serial production continued in 1942-1947. In its course, 80 aircraft were created under the designation DC-4 and nearly 1,200 under the designation C-54. The drive was provided by four radial motors Pratt and Whitney R-2000 with 1400-1450 HP each. The length of the aircraft was 28.6 meters with a wingspan of 35.81 meters.

The DC-4 was designed and built by the Douglas Aircraft Company as the successor to the successful DC-3. Compared to its predecessor, it was characterized by a greater number of engines, an elongation of the fuselage, an increase in the wingspan, as well as a significant increase in range. It was also able to carry up to 42 passengers. The machine was undoubtedly highly successful, but it was characterized by considerable construction complexity and high operating costs. For this reason, only the interest of the US armed forces, which saw a potentially very good transport plane in the DC-4, started mass production. It is worth adding that in the armed forces DC-4 served under the designation C-54 Skymaster.
