The Pratt and Whitney J57 (another designation: Pratt and Whitney JT3C) is an American aviation turbojet engine from the Cold War period. The first successful engine start-up took place in 1950, and serial production started a year later and continued until 1965. Over 21,000 engines of this type were created in its course. In the J57-P-23 version, the engine was approx. 620 cm long, and the weight of the "dry" power unit was 2,347 kilograms. The thrust generated by the engine was 52 kN, and with the afterburner - 76.5 kN. The Pratt and Whitney J57 engine was developed based on several design solutions used in the Pratt and Whitney XT45 turboprop engine, as a potential basic power unit for the future bomber that would eventually become the Boeing B-52. It is worth adding that the Pratt and Whitney J57 engine was the first mass-produced turbojet engine in the USA with a thrust exceeding 45 kN. The presented engine also became the basis for such power units as the Pratt and Whitney TF33 and the Pratt and Whitney J75. The engine was installed on many aircraft, including the F-8 Crusader, F-100 Super Saber, F4D Skyray and Douglas DC-8.
