The NS Savannah was an American nuclear-powered merchant ship that was ordered in 1955, launched in July 1959 and entered service in 1962. The total length of the ship was 181.7 meters and a width of 23.8 meters. Full displacement reached about 14,000 tons, and maximum speed was up to 24 knots. The ship was built at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation in Camden, NJ. The NS Savannah was funded by the US government as one of the world's first nuclear-powered merchant ships. The unit was created under the initiative of the US President DD Eisenhower "Atom for Peace". The cost of building the unit was about $ 47 million, of which a nuclear reactor with nuclear fuel cost as much as 28.3 million. The vessel was decommissioned in 1971, and now serves as a museum ship.
