The GAZ-55 was a Soviet transport and sanitary vehicle from the interwar period and World War II. The vehicle had an overall length of 5.43 meters, a width of 2.04 meters, and a wheelbase of 3.34 meters. It reached a maximum speed of 70 km / h. The car could carry a load of 1,500 kilograms. The drive was a 4-cylinder engine with a capacity of 3.3 liters and a maximum power of 50 HP, synchronized with a 4-speed manual gearbox.
The GAZ-55 was developed as a far-reaching modification of the GAZ-AA truck, and design work on it began in the late 1930s. The main changes concerned the use of a new cargo compartment that was adapted to the transport of the wounded. This compartment is designed in such a way that it can transport two patients on a stretcher and four injured people in a sitting position. Mass production lasted from 1938 to 1945, although few were produced until 1950. During World War II, the structure of the car was radically simplified and some elements, such as one headlight, were abandoned. The GAZ-55 was the most common sanitary vehicle in the Red Army in 1939-1945.
