Trieres was a type of three-row oar-boat used in ancient Greek polis. It probably appeared at the turn of the 6th and 5th centuries BC. and replaced the so-called 50 rowing boats, used by the Greeks back in the archaic era (IX-VI centuries BC). Some believe that the first trieres were created much earlier - in the 7th century BC. The triers were up to 42 meters long and 5 meters wide and had a displacement of up to 80-90 tons. Compared to Persian or especially Phoenician ships from the 6th-5th century BC, the triers had a much lower side and generally were clearly lower, which made them more resistant to crosswinds and more maneuverable at higher waves. At the bow, the triers had a battering ram, most often made of bronze or wrapped in bronze. During the battle, Triera was driven by oars, most often by about 150-180 rowers, and during an ordinary voyage - a sail was hung, treating it as an auxiliary drive. It is worth adding that in Greek triers (especially in Athens), free citizens of the polis served as rowers, and not - as later in ancient Rome - slaves. It is worth adding that in 1985-1987 the Greek Navy financed the creation of a replica of the trieres called HS Olympias, which is currently in the state of the Greek fleet.
