A-Model 07246 IS-1 (Joseph Stalin) the Soviet pre-WW2 experimental fighter

The IS-1 was a Soviet prototype biplane fighter from the interwar period and World War II. The prototype flight took place in 1940, but the machine did not enter serial production. The drive was provided by a single M-63 engine with a capacity of 900 HP. The length of the aircraft was 6.79 meters with a wingspan of 8.6 meters. The deck armament consisted of four 7.62 mm machine guns.

Design work on the Su-1 began in 1937 or 1938, and their goal was to create a biplane fighter with a foldable lower wing in flight. The aim of this procedure was to obtain the highest possible speed in flight and the lowest possible speed during landing. The plane was constructed by Vasily Nikitin, and he was assisted in the work by the initiator of the entire project - the test pilot, Vladimir Shevchenko. In order to shorten the work, the entire project was heavily based on the I-153. Flight tests were carried out in 1940-1942, but they showed high complexity of the machine and the lack of the assumed results. For this reason, work on the IS-1 was discontinued in 1942.
