The Nakajima Ki-49 Donryu is a Japanese twin-engine WWII metal heavy bomber with a dorsal wing configuration known as the Allied Helen. The prototype flight took place in August 1939, and the entry to the line units took place in 1941. The Ki-49 was created as an aircraft that was to replace another Army aviation bomber, the Mitsubishi Ki-21. At the beginning of the war, the Ki-49 was used in Manchuria, southern China, and after 1941 also in New Guinea. The Ki-49 also carried out bomb raids over Australia. However, in the course of the war, it was moved to other tasks, such as sea patrols and ZOP activities. This was due to the fact that both the Ki-49-I and its newer version Ki-49-II had too low speed and insufficient power to carry out bombing missions without fighter cover.
