Petrojarl Cidade de Rio das Ostras is a modern oil processing vessel built in Germany. The keel for this unit was laid in 1980, and the launch took place in 1981. The unit entered service in the same year. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 183 meters and a width of 32.2 meters. The tonnage of the vessel is approximately 45,500 DTW. The Petroarl Cidade de Rio das Ostras (under the name of St. Michaelis) was built at the AG Wesser shipyard in Bremen as a classic crude oil tanker. However, in 2006 the vessel underwent a highly unusual conversion, which involved its conversion from a tanker into a vessel for the transportation and processing of crude oil, and especially for the cleaning of its heavy varieties. The feasibility study for this very unusual conversion was carried out by the Norwegian company Brevik Engineering, and almost all the equipment was made or designed by the Finnish company Wärtsilä. On the other hand, the actual conversion and reconstruction of the vessel took place at the Remontowa Shipyard in Gdańsk in the period 2006-2007.
