JSC 098 Polski siarkowiec KALIOPE lub PENELOPE

Penelope is a contemporary, Polish so-called sulfur, i.e. a merchant ship adapted to the sea transport of sulfur. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 149.4 meters, with a width of 23 meters and a maximum draft of 8.9 meters. The drive was provided by a single Cegielski / MAN 4S50MC engine with a capacity of 7778 KM, which allowed to reach a maximum speed of 14 knots. Penelope was built as one of the five commercial ships (so-called bulk carriers) belonging to the B570 type, which was built at the Szczecin Shipyard in the mid-1990s. These units were characterized by the use of many simplifications and technological innovations in the course of production, e.g. the use of a modern, double-skinned hull structure. Before Penelope entered service, it was rebuilt in 1995 into a sulfur, and the work in this area was carried out by the Gdańsk Remontowa Shipyard. The unit entered service in 1996. It is worth noting that the conversion of the unit to sulfide gas involved, among other things, the installation of special tanks that allow the transport of sulfur at high temperatures.
