The Hispano-Suiza HS.404 automatic cannon is a single-barreled 20mm on-board air cannon used on many British, French and Spanish aircraft. The construction of the HS.404 was based on the Swiss plot of FF S. The plot was developed in the French plant of Hispano-Suiza in the mid-1930s, and its license was quickly acquired by the United Kingdom. On the British Isles, they were produced by the Martin-Baker Aircraft Company, which developed two upgrades of the HS.404-versions Mk.II and Mk.V. The cannon fell out of use shortly after the end of World War II in favor of revolver cannons.
