The SS Sirius was a British passenger ship from the mid-19th century. The unit was launched in 1837 and entered service the same year. Its total length at the time of launching was 54.4 meters and a width of 7.8 meters. The maximum speed reached approx. 12 knots and the crew consisted of up to 36 people. The SS Sirius was built at the Robert Menzies and Sons shipyard in Edinburgh, Scotland. The unit was characterized by a wooden structure and a mixed steam and sail drive. It also had no propeller, but two large paddle wheels on the sides. Interestingly, it was designed for navigation in the Irish Sea, and not for ocean cruises. However, in 1838, he embarked on his famous voyage across the Atlantic, carrying 40 passengers on board. The cruise seemed unlucky - incl. the coal supplies were exhausted in its course - but thanks to the consciousness of the captain, who ordered to obtain fuel from the wooden equipment of the ship, the voyage was successful. This cruise has gone down in history as it is widely recognized as the first Atlantic voyage made solely with the use of mechanical propulsion - without the use of sails.
