Work on the first versions of the future Tachikawa KKY-2 aircraft began in the early 1930s, and precisely after 1932, when the Japanese army placed an order for a new, light ambulance aircraft capable of operating near the front line with abbreviated take-off and landing properties . It was assumed that the new machine would operate primarily from field airfields. The first version of the plane (marked as KKY-1) was powered by the 120 HP Cirrus Hermes IV engine - it took off as early as 1933. However, in the course of operation, problems with the engine appeared very often, which led to the creation of the KKY-2 version with a more powerful engine and already native design.
