The Bristol Centaurus was a British aircraft engine from the interwar period, World War II and the post-war period, produced by the Bristol Airplane Company. It was first tested in 1938. The engine - in the Centaurus VII model - weighed 1,223 kilograms with a diameter of 140.5 centimeters. Its capacity was 53.6 liters. It is estimated that about 2,500 examples of this aircraft engine of all versions were produced during World War II. The Bristol Centaurus aircraft engine was developed based on previous power units produced by the Bristol Airplane Company - and especially the Jupiter and Hercules engines. The engine had a double star design and was an 18 cylinder unit. Undoubtedly, it was much larger than its predecessors, but it also generated much greater maximum power, which in the Centaurus VII model reached 2520 hp, and in later models it increased to 2625 hp in the Centaurus 170 or 173 model. Bristol Centaurus engine - in various versions - it was used as a power unit for many British planes of the Second World War and the post-war period. It powered such machines as: Hawker Tempest, Hawker Sea Fury, Blackburn Firebrand, but also Bristol Brabazon.
