Jelcz 640 is a Polish three-axle, road, heavy-duty truck, the first prototypes of which were created in the mid-1970s, and serial production started in 1977 at Zak³ady Samochodowe Jelcz. The Jelcz 640 car is the result of cooperation between the Jelcz plant and the Austrian company Steyr, which uses many components of the Steyr 1490 truck, especially the frame and the front axle. The Jelcz 640, compared to the Austrian vehicle, uses a completely different domestic-made driver's cabin, a different gearbox developed by FPS Tczew, and above all - a different drive unit, i.e. a diesel engine from the SW 680 family developed at WSK Mielec with a capacity of 242 HP . The Jelcz 640 is a vehicle with two rear axle drive and is most often used as a base for specialized vehicles, especially concrete mixers and tippers.
