The Lada 2101 (another name: Zhyguli) is a Soviet passenger car, produced by the WAZ company (now AUTO-Waz), which was first presented to the public in 1970. Its serial production started in the same year and continued until 1988. It was concentrated at the Volga Automobile Plant in the city of Togliatti in the present-day Russia. About 4.85 million cars of this model were built in its course.
The Lada 2101 was the result of establishing cooperation between the USSR and the Fiat concern, which resulted in the signing of a license agreement in 1966 for the production of Fiat 124 in Radland. The new, Soviet car, however, was not a simple copy of its progenitor, but was quite thoroughly modernized. First of all, the gearbox, suspension and braking system were changed, the body structure was also significantly strengthened and the drive unit was rebuilt, which was initially a 1.2-liter engine with 58 HP. In 1974, the Lada 2101 underwent modernization, which mainly involved the use of a new engine and cosmetic styling changes. In the WAZ offer, the 2101 model was replaced by the Lada 2105, which was a development of its predecessor.
