The McDonnell XF-85 Goblin is an American jet experimental all metal low wing escort fighter. The flight of the prototype took place in August 1948. In total, only two copies of this aircraft were made. The XF-85 was developed as a machine to be carried by the mother planes, i.e. the modified B-29. Its main task was to cover the planned bomb raids on the territory of the USSR. However, after many attempts and due to the geometrically growing range of jet fighters, the project was abandoned. The USAF command recognized that the XF-85 was simply inadequate to perform its role effectively. Technical data: length: 4.5 m, wingspan: 6.4 m, height: 2.5 m, maximum speed: 1069 km / h, speed of climb: 63 m / s, practical ceiling: 14 600 m, armament: fixed - 4 M2 machine guns cal. .12.7mm.
